I was so enthusiastic about the arrival of Target, and the enthusiasm stayed in place for a few months, but as the excitement's worn off Target hasn't worn very well.  Others have said the same things:  disorganized, poorly stocked, clerks with attitude.  But recently the escalators haven't been working regularly, and I'm less and less patient with the screaming hoards.  I'll keep shopping here because it's within walking distance of my house, but I now tense up as I approach.

Oh, I asked someone stocking shelves if they had book ends.  She said, "I don't know what that is."

This Target kind of let me down.

I am originally from Minnesota (land of 10,000 lakes and 10,000 Target Stores.... where Target's headquarters is based out of and where Target started), and in Minnesota the Targets are pristine.  They're huge, clean, sparkling, fully stocked.  They're like mystical mazes full of amazing appliances, decor, clothing, and other items that just make your life easier.

This Target was dirty, items weren't stocked or were in the wrong places, there weren't many goods on clearance, the displays weren't creative, the lighting was poor, and it wasn't as large or didn't have the selection as ones in other areas (including the one in Arlington/Pentagon City - that one is much better!).

I can't complain too much - when it came down to it, I was glad to have gone because the prices are better than most other places.  And, this Target is the only place in the city that I've been able to buy inexpensive pet (cat) goods - including a cat carrier that my cat doesn't want to go near, cat food, a scooper, toys, etc.  Way cheaper than Cleveland Park's stupid Petsmart or whatever it is.  However, the trip wasn't the relaxing shopping experience I'm used to.  Too bad.

All I wanted in life was a few v-neck t-shirts.  I'm a super buff 140 lbs, so I wear a size small shirt.  Naturally.  My pale skin shimmers next to the white cotton.  It is really a sight to behold.

So, white shirts.  Simple enough, right?

Wrong.

This Target led me astray.  I'm still trying to figure out why I spent so much time looking through piles of disorganized tees only to find out that they didn't have any in my size in stock.

Instead, the store pretty much forced me to spend $100 on other stuff.

But seriously folks, this Target is clean, but disorganized and has less stock on the shelves that your used to for this chain.  The cashier also gave me 'tude on the way out.

This Target holds true to the name. It is clean, organized, well stocked and the staff is friendly. It is right next to the metro and the garage is priced at $1 an hour for the first three to four hours.

When it first opened it had trouble keeping items in stock because of demand, but now that the initial push is over, they are pretty reliable.

It is really nice to have all the pluses of they city AND be able to walk to a target!

I love Target. Growing up in rural Ohio, my mom would bring home goods from Target (45 minutes away!) on her way home from work, and Target grew in my mind as the mythical source of all that is cheap and convenient. In my head, Target is always shiny.

But not this Target. THIS Target is TERRIBLY organized. They had home organizing  stuff in THREE SEPARATE PARTS OF THE STORE. Each section shared a different selection of goods with the other sections! It took me THREE HOURS to get what I needed here because the store was so terribly organized. A typical Target trip of the kind I was making would normally take one hour.

I go to Target over Ikea + Rite Aid because of its convenience. Everything I needed could have been bought at those two stores, but because Ikea always takes forever and wears away at one's soul, I try to avoid it. Yet Ikea would be a walk in the park compared to this Target. But after this ineffective trip to Target, I'm going to have to go to Ikea anyway, AND I wasted three hours on a beautiful day at this hell hole. I strongly recommend that folks in need of general home supplies skip this Target entirely. It is not a normal Target. It is ill-supplied, organized in an anti-helpful manner, and the staff seems to know more or less nothing about their inventory. Its only good point is its convenient location. Do not go here.

3.0 stars:-)!  I love target but I made the mistake to go to this new location during opening week.  Amongst the mass chaos of people and shopping carts becoming jammed in their fancy escalator system, people everywhere not watching where they are walking bumping into you and not being courteous just in a daze over the delights that Target offers, I could no longer take it and I had to have a drink, a stiff one.  It was sensory overload and way toooo crowded for Stretch to deal with on this trip!

I was surprised how dismal and plain the decor was in this mall and that the parking garage was not open during its grand opening week but I have heard it has opened now.  I expected a little more, but like everyone else, I will probably give it one more shot after the newness has had a chance to decay.

Another concern I have is I hope the city is successful in merging national chains with the cultural flavor this neighborhood already possesses.  It would be a shame if this turned into a low end Chevy Chase and we loose everything that was dynamic about this neighborhood before the big boys came to play.

I think I love you...so what was I so afraid of?  The Partridge Family should be the spokespeople for this joint.

I was afraid.  I was afraid that the new CH Target would ruin my suburban love for the store that introduced fantastic lines like Isaac Mizrahi, Phillip Starck, Paul & Joe and ZAC POSEN to the masses.

I stereotyped. I am a stereotyper.  Sorry.  At least I admit my deficiencies.  No need, folks!  This place rocks.  It wasn't until I was checking out that I realized that there was an upstairs.  I didn't miss a thing and there is an entire floor more!!!!!!!!!  That is the shit.  Sorry, it is.  I didn't go up that night because I wanted to save some fun for the next visit but I must say, Target is the BOMB in CH!

More magical than peppermint-scented elves.  LOVE IT!

I have a love/hate relationship with Target. The Target at Columbia Heights, however, is almost all hate.

It's not unlike other Targets I've been to.

- Merchandise is either limited in variety, understocked, damaged, or disorganized.
- Lines at the registers are long and slow.
- Weekly sales are pathetic. (e.g. 10% off Revlon products)
- Employees can be VERY unhelpful.

I was looking on Target.com for a briefcase. I needed it ASAP. With their handy dandy "store locator", I was able to find a style (supposedly) available at this Target. I called them to verify their stock of that briefcase.

(This is when I got really tipped off.)

Me: Hi, I wanted to check whether you have a specific style of briefcase at your store.
Employee #1: We don't sell briefcases.
Me: Are you sure?
Employee #1: Please hold.
Me: ....
Employee #1: I'm sorry, we don't sell any briefcases.
Me: I've seen briefcases at Target before. They're usually located in the luggage section.
Employee #1: No, we don't have them. Please hold, I'll transfer you to customer service. (Phone clicks.)
Employee #2: This is Target customer service, how can I help you?
Me: I'm looking for a briefcase.
Employee #2: We don't have briefcases.
Me: I'm positive you sell them. It clearly states on your website that you have more than one style available.
Employee #2: The online inventory isn't accurate.
Me: How so?
Employee #2: Because we don't sell any briefcases.
Me: Ugh. Thank you anyway.  (Click.)

I called the Target in Wheaton. Not only was customer service friendlier, but more helpful. A lady there browsed their store inventory, but had no briefcases in stock. She even checked the Target in Columbia Heights and informed me that they had two available of that style. However, it takes 24 hours to update their system so the Target in Columbia Heights may have sold out.

Curtis, overhearing my earlier phone conversation with Target in Columbia Heights, saw how frustrated I was.

Me: (Insert expletive infixation)! I ****ing know that they sell briefcases! ARGH! They even advertised it in their weekly ad!
Curtis: Don't worry. I'll go to Target. If I find that they do have briefcases, I'm going to have a word with them.
Me: (Finally, Curtis is being assertive. It's his briefcase I'm looking for anyway.)

Guess what? They did have briefcases in the luggage section. They thought I was talking about ATTACHE briefcases. The style I was looking for was a microfiber briefcase (as described on their website). Maybe I should've called it a laptop bag, which it isn't. Regardless, their employees need to be more knowledgeable about products. Come on, an attache case isn't the ONLY type of briefcase. You don't need to be James Bond to know that.

Moral of the story: None, really. This Target's customer service is either non-existent or simply clueless. Why am I not surprised? It has the same downfalls as other Targets. Only it's in a chicer neighborhood, and that's the only major difference.

I was so psyched when DC finally got a Target! This one's convenient to Metro and 14th/16th Street buses.  The cart escalators are irresistible.

But when I finally set foot in the store, my heart sank a little.  Columbia Heights is among DC's most distinctive neighborhoods, but when you're in Target, you might as well be in suburban Ohio.  There's simply no "sense of place."

I'm also a little irritated that this mall complex, DC USA, is receiving millions in public funds. The DC government website describes the tax abatement and $42 million in "tax increment financing" for the garage:
http://dcbiz.dc.gov/dm...

NY Times journalist David Cay Johnston explains tax increment financing in this NPR interview.  It's worth reading/hearing, if you want to know where your sales taxes really go:
http://prairieweather....

I'll still shop here though, despite all the corporate welfare.

A Target in DC?  I had to check today's date to make sure it wasn't April Fool's Day.  At last!

I went to work, wearing clothes that I planned to wear for the night out in town.  A colleague asked me to go walking with her during lunch.  I did, thinking that the weather had been wonderfully cool earlier in the week.  It was so hot outside, I was sweating worse than the pig.

Uh, no no no!  I ain't gonna go out like this!  Thus, Target came to the rescue.  Well, ok, I had to go to Target to get rescued.

Que suave!  I liked this particular location!  I even loved that it was 2 floors, accompanied with a pair of escalators, one for you and one for your cart.  How cool is that!?!

This particular store is big, which means there are wide selections.  The men's department is the best compared to the other locations that I've been.  I could have bought a whole new summer wardrobe right there.

Thank goodness for my partner being right there with me, curbing my shopping spree.  "No! No! No!"  Ugh!  I thought I left my parents back in Texas.

Anyways, I found the perfect outfit to wear for the evening and got compliments.  Thanks, Target!

Will definitely be coming back.

The new Target was understandably understocked at 8pm on a Sunday night, but we were still able to find what we needed! The grocery section was a lot larger here than most stores I'd been to, but not quite to SuperTarget levels.

A couple of notes:
1. Sure, the parking garage is easy to navigate and super cheap ($1/hour) but beware: change is given in the form of $1 coins. Yeah, coins. As I discovered this morning at the office, you can't use those in Coke machines. Ugh.
2. The lines are loooooooong. Even in the express lanes. Just be prepared.
3. The shoes are located upstairs, away from the rest of the women's clothing.
4. They have a Starbucks and a Pizza Hut Express inside... not the super sketchy Target-brand "cafe." Although I kind of miss the cafe...

I visited today and was pretty disappointed, because I have high expectations when it comes to Tar-zhay.  While they do have a lot of stuff, they didn't have some great things that other Targets in the area do have:

- Wet-n-Wild cosmetics.  I know you're ashamed to admit it, but there are some of you out there who use W&W.  This Target has NONE.
- Max Factor.  I was searching for Lipfinity.  NO Max Factor cosmetics, period.
- Folding travel toothbrushes.  While they do have travel toothbrushes (in the travel toiletries section, far right front corner of store), they do not have the neat ones that fold.
- TIGI After Party hair balm.  They have a VERY limited selection of Bedhead hair products.
- Gillette Sensor razors for women.

Other things that are limited or sub-par:
- Equal sweetener: they DO have it, but I bought the last box today.
- A lot of the cosmetics needed re-stocking and were just out of stuff.

The good news:
- Starbucks ground coffee is less than $7 there!  Yippee.
- They have instant grits, but no variety.
- The do have Burts Bees (large selection) as well as Bumble and Bumble hair products.
- They have Weight Watchers snacks: both the candy and the ho-ho's.

**SPECIAL POST-EASTER NOTE:  I got a bag of "Chicks and Rabbits" (like Circus Peanuts) for 69cents.  All of the easter candy is DIRT CHEAP and 75% off.  It's the best candy deal I have ever seen.  Candy's in the very back of the main level of the store.

You know you're officially a yuppie when you get a rush when you find out they just opened a Target near you. It's like realizing you have a drinking problem when you catch yourself fishing a bottle of Old Granddad out of your toilet tank. If I had to write a screenplay about when I found out the Target in Columbia Heights opened, it'd go something like this:

Me: (rings up friend).

Frank: "Urhgh... uh, hello?"

Me: "Frank, it's me! Guess what?"

Frank: "Jason? It's four f*cking AM!"

Me: "It's OPEN!!!"

Frank: "Jason, as soon as I get in my head, I'm gonna have a cigarette. Then, I'm gonna grab an X-acto knife, drive over to your place and cut out your sple..."

Me: "It's Target! THEY'RE OPEN!!!"

Frank: "Where the f*ck did I put my keys? Dude, I'll be over in five!"

What I'm trying to get at is that there really hasn't been a Target convenient to many of us in the area until now. The only Metro accessible Target "near" me was at the Springfield Mall. That's all changed now.

It's definitely one of the larger Targets in the area. Whatever you need, they've got it here. Electronics, kitchen goods, clothes, bath and body stuff, all under one roof. And at least somewhat cheaper than a grocery store. Hell, I got three bottles of the shampoo I use for $10! Plus, Target doesn't have that Wal-Mart stigma. I hate Wal-Mart. I feel so out of place there. I'm not clinically obese, I take at least one shower a day, and I haven't had "relations" with my relations, so to speak.

I walked in just to look around, maybe pick up some Old Spice body wash. I set a strict limit of $10 to spend at MOST. So what happens? Yeah, I walked out with $90 worth of shower gel, razor blades, shampoo, toothpaste, and a shirt.

I have to give DC credit: they prepared for this and they got it right. Traffic control was out in force. There was a police presence. News stations were conducting interviews with patrons clearly excited to be here.

As crowded as it was, they had plenty of staff wandering the store to help customers out. And as busy as it was when I went, I was able to find an open register and get checked out in a matter of minutes.

The verdict: if I could be serious for a moment, the Target in Columbia Heights is something the community clearly needed. We can joke about Target being the epitome of yuppiedom, but when I went there, I saw a microcosm of DC: men, women, children, whites, African Americans, Asians, Hispanics, gays, straights, singles, couples, families, the young, the old, the rich, the poor. Here for only one thing...

To come in for toothpaste and come out with $100 worth of random stuff they didn't know they needed until them came in... an orgy of consumption to unite us all as human beings :)

Hallelujah, there's a Target in NW DC!

It opened today (March 5), several days ahead of schedule. In the brand-spanking-new development right across from the Columbia Heights Metro, this Target is going to change my life. I'll have no reason to go to Virginia ever again.

The store itself is very large-- two floors, with all your normal sections including a large grocery area. Lots of staff roaming the wide aisles with their signature red shirts and khakis. There were plenty of checkout stands and people to man them. And my favorite: low, low prices on everything I need. Good bye CVS, this Target is getting all my business from now on.

I'm not going to complain too much because I love having a Target in the city. However, like the Safeway in Dupont, this should be referred to as the Soviet Target. I was amazed how empty the shelves were in some of the departments.

The special escalators for the shopping carts are pretty nifty. I saw a guy push his cart onto one and for some reason, I thought something was not right. Oh yeah, he left his daughter (maybe 5 years old) sitting in the cart to ride on the way up. Now, if I were five, I'd think that would be pretty cool, but something tells me that might not be the safest thing in the world.

Anyway, they have these red phones scattered throughout, so you can call customer service if you need help finding things. Luckily, the staff seems to be large enough that I was able to get help when needed.

It is clean, super big, and the checkout lines are pretty fast. My only hope is that it stays that way.

The parking lot is $1 for the first hour. Not bad, not bad.

As Cam said before, you will most likely run into someone you know. I ran into a girl I knew from college.

Be careful, though. This target is like all the others...getting you to want/buy things you didn't go there for...

I've never been a huge fan of Target. Yes it's cheap and has a gazillion items in stock but that only tricks you into spending more than you should on something you don't need!

My roommate and I visited the DC Mall Target after months of anticipating its opening. And we also had a bunch of coupons, including $5 off $10 we got in the mail. So the cart escalator is kinda cool but this place is enormous. I felt like I was back in the suburbs of Long Island (not a pleasant environment)!

I took off 2 stars for the terrible service we experienced at the register. We had an issue with one of our coupons and the cashier was unable to explain to me why the discount wouldn't register. I had to ask her to call a manager who promptly corrected the issue.

I was so excited about the special shopping cart escalator after reading all of these Yelp reviews.  I was so excited that I hopped on the Metro ... even though I didn't need anything from Target.  (Actually, I think people always need something from Target, even if they don't know they do.)

I was extremely disappointed that the special escalators were not working.  I would have subtracted a couple of stars to show my disappointment but instead I got a cart full of stuff I didn't need that made me happy.

Yay, there's a Target in DC!! Right across the street from the CH Metro, Target is on the second floor of DC USA - with a Marshall's coming, Best Buy and Bed, Bath and Beyond!

I set out on a mission yesterday to buy a new hair straightener because the one I've been currently using I've had since...high school. Yeah. I found the one I wanted and it was on sale. Even better!

Two floors - escalators as well as shopping cart escalators (although the UP was not working when I was there, but the DOWN one was curiously enough.) I spent a good deal of time in the Kitchen section - looking at pots, pans and bakeware. I was able to resist the temptation and limited my impulse buyings to a pastry brush...and pancake mix...and easy mac...and a picture frame...and some gum that I ended up not liking.

This is a great location for a Target in DC and I def recommend taking the metro here...although I will have to limit my trips so my impulse buys don't slaughter my bank account...(as if my expeditions to the Container Store and Crate&Barrel don't already do that!)

I should state upfront that I have an unhealthy obsession with Target. This being the case, I have suffered greatly since my move to the District. Nine months without Target is a sad, sad state of affairs...but no more! Move over, mom and pop...cheap, mass-produced goodness has arrived-and to add insult to injury they brought Starbucks along as well (which is even funnier considering that there is one directly across the street). Now, if I had the money to care about mom and pop, I would. But the truth is, I'm poor.  And Target allows me to shop without panicking over my tiny amount of fundage.

I woke at 7am on Saturday just to visit the brand spankin' new store. I know this is pretty sad, and I'm coming to terms with that; however, I was not disappointed. Oh no, not one...but TWO levels of affordable goodness. I am now dreaming of all the items I will purchase on my next  visits...a crockpot, a mixer, cheap jewelry, towels... This time I walked out with two shirts, hangers, a paper towel holder and some cleaning supplies...for under $45. The only way this location could be beat for convenience is if it were directly across the street from my apartment building. Or if I could gain access to it through teleportation. Screw you, CVS! Between this place and the new Walgreens, I will never have to visit one of your locations ever again. How's that for just another ordinary miracle today?

Ohhh its so sweet not to have to leave the district for shopping.  Traffic is a bit of a nightmare here, though parking is cheap and plentiful in their new garage.  Its a good size target, though certainly not the biggest one out there.  DC has needed an urban shopping center for a while now, and I could not be happier to say good riddance to Target Alexandria!

Needs to be restocked.
The escalators don't work consistently.
Way too many people.

However, it's cheaper than CVS.
Has groceries.
And it's in DC!!!!

Heads up: You will most likely run into someone you know. (co-worker, ex-lover, etc...)

I could spend the entire weekend absorbed in the aisles looking for useful items I probably don't really need.

A haiku for Target:

The shiny red sign

Over two glorious floors

A shopping beacon

p.s.  they have a parking garage for only $1/hour but i'd advise taking the metro cause traffic is already not great and will only get worse. also, the city is planning on putting up a few meters for short-term parking

p.p.s.  the cart escalator that takes your cart up/down the floors is pretty sweet....i just hope it never breaks down!

Let me start by saying that I like little kitschy shops as much as the next guy. You will never find me in Starbucks as long as Columbia Heights Coffee is in business. But when it comes to basics of life, you can't beat Target. And among the big-box department stores, I have always felt that Target is hands-down the best of them. Whereas even the thought of a trip to Wal-Mart can result in weeks of therapy for depression and suicidal thoughts, I have always found shopping at Target to be a reasonably pleasant experience.

I stopped in for the first time on Sunday, a few days after their grand opening. And it is a wonder to behold. The store was bustling with throngs of happy shoppers, neighbors chatting with neighbors. This place is almost certainly going to be our version of the Social Safeway. Yet despite the crowds, the checkout lines were moving quickly and smoothly. There's even a person whose job it is to help you find the best line! Compare that to Giant, where you're guaranteed at least a 10 minute wait while your cashier finishes texting their buddy. No doubt, I will be doing my incidental grocery shopping at Target from now on. That's right, it's got a grocery section too!

Best of all, it features the Target trademark cart escalator. I just love those things. Okay, so I'm easily amused, but how can you not find that cool?

I took a few pictures. Visit my blog or go to the ... er.... target of this link: http://www.flickr.com/...

Considering the fact that there is not a Target that is accessible to me by metro/bus, I am being a little bit more generous than usual. This location does not have all the items I am used to, and it is a bit sparse on some random things here and there. However, beggars can't be choosers.. the prices on cleaning/household items, many food products, bath&beauty, etc are far better than Giant or Safeway, and especially much cheaper than Whole Paycheque (the only stores around me within walking distance), so with that in mind I will return. The food area is actually pretty large and has some good deals; capers were 32 cents! I would probably avoid it on the weekends or later in the afternoon, as people say it gets insanely busy with loooong lines.  When I went there (12pm on a Thursday), it was pretty empty. It is worth checking out, and should not prove to be much a hassle given the metro is right across from Target.

Good bye to all the overpriced Safeway/Giant/CVS toilet paper...now there's a Target in the hood and it's 1) in DC and 2) Metro accessible.  Let the impulse buying begin....

i give this target an extra star because of the fantastic deals i obtained on easter candy, the day after or so, 79 cents for a big bag of m&ms, and little snickers. (good in a bad way, i suppose) i now see another Yelper has mentioned this - easter candy ftw!
clearly the person in charge of ordering easter candy went waaayyy overboard. in fact, there might still be some left!

like others have said, this store suffers from the lack of restocking for items that most people go to Target for such as tp, paper towels, soap, etc. As this is a common feature in many DC stores, why i imagined Target would somehow avoid this is now beyond me.

i went to get a jump drive for an upcoming conference. (before the best buy opened). Naturally, they were out of the ones i wanted, so i settled on something different, and it has worked fine.

service is not the best.
